Comprehensive mechanical services, including repair, rebuilding and replacement of roll shells, roll internals, journals, bearings, housings, and miscellaneous parts and services for plain, suction and CC rolls, are an integral part of Stowe Woodward's one-stop roll service.
Detailed inspections and reports ensure optimal roll performance and timely return to the production line. Strategically located, full service facilities perform repairs on journals and bearing housings including full journal/head replacement.
Skilled technicians with the latest tools and diagnostic equipment disassemble, clean and inspect all parts for condition and critical components are measured for size to specifications. A detailed inspection report is provided with recommended repair options and costs for approval.
Inspection, overhaul and repair services are available for all types of rolls, bearings and journals, housings, suction boxes and internal parts of all types of rolls. Programs for Crown Compensating rolls, head fits, roll balancing, reel spools and water-cooling systems as well as the fabrication of new rolls, dummy end plates and necessary small parts are part of a comprehensive mechanical services effort.

Suction Rolls
Stowe Woodward specializes in inspection and repairs of suction rolls of all types and manufacturers. A complete overhaul consists of the following:
Tending Side
- Disassemble and inspect front main journal, bearing and housing.
- Measure and inspect tending side fit.
- Polish front plate and tags, replace tags as needed.
Suction Box / Internals
- Complete disassembly of suction box.
- Cleaning and washing of shell.
- Disassemble and inspect internal bearings and housing.
- Inspect all suction box parts.
- Remove and inspect seal strips and air load tubes (or springs).
- Measure end deckle clearance.
- Purge all lube / air / water lines.
- Pressure wash and clean suction box.
- Install supplier or customer provided air load tubes, strips and deckles.
- Clean and inspect all mating fits and or bushings.
Drive Side
- Remove drive side head.
- Disassemble and inspect rear main journal, housing and bearing.
- Measure and inspect drive side head fit.
Miscellaneous
- Sand blast and paint all exterior housings and parts with specified color.
- Assemble roll with stainless steel fasteners.
- Issue preliminary report noting discrepancies and costs to repair (after inspections have been made and comparisons to specification are made).
- Issue detailed report of work performed after roll is delivered.

Plain & Press Rolls
Stowe Woodward provides a complete range of services for all working press rolls and non-working wire, felt and paper carrying rolls and reel spools. Complete bearing and journal inspection (provided with all recovers) includes:
Housings
- Match mark all parts prior to disassembly.
- I.D. checked for dimensions and shape.
- Seals inspected for need of replacement.
- Inspect for proper lubrication of bearing.
- Grit blast to remove scale and rust (tape machined surfaces).
- Spray paint complete housing with primer and epoxy paint.
- Assemble with stainless steel fasteners.
- All grease fittings replaced.
Bearings
- All bearings thoroughly cleaned.
- Inspect for wear, corrosion, pitting or other defects and documented.
- Bearing manufacturer representative inspections if available.
Journals
- All bearing fits checked in four different planes for size and shape.
- TIR of journals and shell checked.
- Contact area inspected. If suspect, checked in 8 different areas for overall average.
Report
- Bearing specifications and conditions.
- Diameters measured on journals.
- Bearing surface contact evaluation.
- General condition of journal and other observations.
- Housing dimensions.
- Condition of housings and other observations.
- Recommendations for each component.
- Quotations for repairs outside of general scope of inspection.
- Final repair and replacement of any parts needed.
- Issue a final detailed inspection and repair report after delivery of roll.
