Forming Section
The purpose of roll covers in a forming section is to assist in dewatering and provide a smooth and durable surface for the rolls that carry the wire or forming fabric.

The Black Diamond hard rubber cover from Stowe Woodward has been the work horse compound for table rolls, breast rolls, wire return and wire turning rolls for over a quarter-century and is still the standard for many wet end applications.

The superior abrasion resistance of Dyna-X makes it the cover of choice for long life in most forming section applications. Dyna-X is preferred in doctored positions.

Fabmate, a softer cover at 12-15 P&J with an excellent coefficient of friction, is the long-life rubber cover of choice for plain and suction couch rolls. Micromate III is the ultimate long-life cover in a soft compound.

Breast Rolls
A large diameter roll, located near the stock inlet of the headbox, to stabilize the fabric through the sheet forming zone.

Breast rolls have steel shells with rubber or composite covers to aid in sheet formation and resist wear caused by fabric slippage.

Table Rolls & Wire Return Rolls
Used to convey the fabrics through the forming section, the table and wire rolls require a rock hard cover with high abrasion resistance to maintain a smooth surface finish and extend cover life.

In addition, the high abrasion resistant roll covers require release to resist stock build-up. A high coefficient of friction reduces fabric slippage and a smooth finish minimizes felt wear.

Wire Drive Roll
Located after the couch roll, the wire drive roll provides the horsepower transfer needed to drive the forming fabric.

Because of the potential for severe abrading, turning rolls are covered with highly abrasion resistant rubber and are typically 10 to 15 P&J with a high coefficient of friction to minimize fabric slippage.

Couch Roll
The couch roll dewaters the sheet as it is carried by the fabric to increase the sheet consistency to the level required for pick-up by the felt.

Suction couch rolls are typically supplied with large countersunk holes to maximize open area and are covered with highly abrasion resistant rubber or composite materials to minimize cover wear.

Lumpbreaker
A large diameter, lightweight roll located above a suction couch and operating at low pressures, smoothes the paper and enhances dewatering before it leaves the fabric.

Lumpbreaker rolls are covered with a very soft (160 to 250 P&J) high release cover compound that resists steam and chemical attack.
