Roll technology encompasses the manufacture, covering and servicing of the large metal rolls (up to 11 meters long, 2 meter in diameter, and 70 tons) over which clothing products are mounted and between which the paper web travels as it goes from a wet slurry to finished paper. As many as 100 rolls are used in each paper-making machine. Xerium roll cover products provide a surface with the mechanical properties necessary to process the paper sheet in a cost-effective manner that delivers the sheet qualities desired by the paper producer.
Xerium roll cover products are designed to withstand extreme temperature and pressure conditions, and are the result of considerable research and development and a sophisticated manufacturing process. Like our clothing products, our roll cover products are customized to each individual paper-making machine.
Over time, roll covers wear down and must be replaced regularly in order for paper producers to sustain high quality paper output and operate efficiently. Roll covers also require regular refurbishment, and Xerium's Stowe Woodward division provides refurbishment services for previously installed roll covers. Roll covers require routine refurbishment every 3-12 months and replacement every 2-5 years.
Xerium roll products include:
- Roll Covers
- Bowed Rolls
- Calendar Rolls
Mount Hope is Xerium's only roll manufacturer, specializing in bowed rolls, which flex to control the tension of the clothing and paper web during manufacturing. In the forming section, Mount Hope rolls maintain the condition of the fabrics for better sheet formation and longer life for the clothing. In the press, size, coating and dryer sections, Mount Hope rolls optimize the felts and maintain a smooth, flat sheet. Bowed rolls ensure that a wrinkle-free paper sheet enters slitter and winder operations. Bowed rolls help manufacturers of film, foil, textiles and non-woven products, as well as printers and converters reduce rejects and improve efficiency through a reduction in wrinkles, calender cuts, and uneven winding.
Papermakers rely on Xerium's Stowe Woodward division to create roll coverings with the performance and durability that improves sheet quality, increases productivity and lowers production costs. Manufacturers look to Stowe Woodward products for improved web quality and increased production. We deliver leading edge technology in rubber, polyurethane, ceramic and composite covers for the most demanding applications. Stowe Woodard engineers use data from paper manufacturers' monitoring systems to develop new materials such as nanotechnology-based composite covers that deliver exponential increases in performance properties.
